Strategic Communications In thinking about this month's Top Ten Strategies for Tuesday on strategic communications, we’ve consulted two great references: • "Why Transformation Efforts Fail," an article by John Kotter published in Harvard Business Review (April 1995) • Leading in Times of Significant Change and Uncertainty: Straight Talk from Senior Leaders, a book by Joe Raia, founder and President of Glimmer Glass Consulting and Training.  This book contains some great quotes and practical advice from senior leaders on how to more effectively lead during times of change. I will provide more information on some of the 10 suggestions for strategic communication during this month's webcast, which we're hosting on August 25 and will focus on low-cost, high-impact organizational development tools.  I encourage all of you to attend the session to learn about how organizations are strategically communicating and managing during these times of change. 1. Make sure that town hall meetings and one-on-one conversations provide not only a forum for senior leaders to explain strategy, but also serve as a place where specific questions can be answered. “As the business evolves during these changing times, a premium will be placed on the leaders’ communication with their employees. It is critical that employees have easy access to the leaders and that the leaders are prepared to answer questions. . . .” 1  During times of change, it is so important that leaders be as honest and transparent as possible and share as much information as possible. 2. Several specific suggestions for disarming the rumor mill: • Communicate early and often • Be as honest and transparent as possible • Share as much information as possible “Fear of the unknown generates more anxiety than anything else. . . . Sharing information is crucial.  Give people what they need to form opinions and to make decisions—based on facts, data and reality . . … [Read more...]

Three Great Questions for Thursday

biz ppl

Questions of Leadership There is no doubt about it -- leaders in organizations are under increasing pressure to  produce results and meet multiple demands. In a recent survey conducted by PPS International Limited, nearly 75% of respondents rated "The ability to balance or integrate conflicting demands" as critical to leadership success. It's doubtful that this comes as a surprise to anyone in organizations: If you represent Human Resources, you see the challenge in the questions you get from your internal partners. If you are a leader--you feel the pressure and demands from your staff and your manager. If you are an individual contributor--you know the support you expect from your own supervisor, who is often carrying his or her own project load. Given these demands, consider that your leadership development efforts can support the stretched-thin manager in meeting these demands by answering for them three main questions: 1. What is expected of me as a leader in this organization now and into the future? Regardless of tenure, title, or track, leaders want to know what the standard for performance is. They want a picture of success that is prioritized and achievable. Through your leadership development process, you can provide leaders with a success profile and support this with tools and skills to achieve it. 2. How well do I meet these expectations? A robust leadership development process not only presents the picture of success, but provides a way for individuals to gauge how they are doing. Through formal and informal assessment and feedback processes, participants in leadership development efforts find their strengths and Achilles' Heels. 3. How can I become more efficient and skillful?  A comprehensive leadership development process ensures that leaders can perform skills that make their lives easier. Leadership development that is focused on concepts rarely results in behavior change. However, a skill-building … [Read more...]
